The Key to Perfect Volume Control in Headphone Amplifiers: Pre-Gain
When it comes to high-quality sound with headphones, many people immediately think of impedance, output power, or the choice between transistors and operational amplifiers. However, an often overlooked yet essential feature of modern headphone amplifiers is the Pre-Gain adjustment. What exactly lies behind this term, and why can it make the difference between a good and a great listening experience? A look into the world of audio technology, inspired by experts like Fried Reim of Lake People, reveals how Pre-Gain optimizes control over sound.
What is Pre-Gain and Why is it Important?
Pre-Gain refers to the ability to adjust the amplification of a headphone amplifier to the output level of the audio source and the sensitivity of the headphones before the signal reaches the volume control. Without this adjustment, issues can arise that diminish the listening experience. Imagine turning the volume knob on your amplifier, only to find that the sound remains too quiet or suddenly jumps to a high level. Perhaps the knob is only usable in the lower range, disrupting the balance between channels, or you hear an annoying noise mixed with the music. This is where Pre-Gain comes in.
By individually adjusting the input level, Pre-Gain ensures that the volume control operates in an optimal range – ideally around the “12 o’clock position.” The result: smooth, precise volume adjustment, minimized interference, and better control over the soundstage. This flexibility is especially crucial for headphones with varying impedances (from below 2 ohms to 600 ohms) and differing sensitivities.
The Evolution of Pre-Gain Technology
In the past, Pre-Gain adjustment was rather rudimentary. The adjustment range was typically ±12 dB and often controlled via DIP switches on the back or even inside the device – hardly user-friendly. Modern headphone amplifiers, such as those developed by Lake People or Violectric, now offer an expanded range of up to ±18 dB. Even better: in newer models, the Pre-Gain control is accessible directly on the front panel, significantly improving usability. This evolution underscores how seriously manufacturers take perfect level matching – for both professional studio users and audiophile Hi-Fi enthusiasts.
Practical Benefits: From Noise to Channel Balance
Without Pre-Gain, volume adjustment can become a balancing act. If the source’s output level is too high or the headphones are too sensitive, the volume control gets stuck in a narrow, low range. This not only makes operation impractical but can also affect channel balance – the left and right channels might sound slightly different, distorting the stereo image. Additionally, excessive amplification can unnecessarily boost the source’s background noise, an effect particularly noticeable with headphones due to their proximity to the ears.
Pre-Gain elegantly solves this problem. The amplification is adjusted so that the volume control can be used meaningfully across its full range. Noise is minimized, channel balance remains stable, and the user retains full control over the volume – a difference you can hear and feel.
Our Perfection of Pre-Gain Technology
At Lake People, we have elevated Pre-Gain adjustment to a new level. Under the leadership of our founder Fried Reim, a pioneer in audio technology, we rely on a patented Pre-Gain circuit that adapts flexibly to any source and headphone. Whether in our rugged G-Series for studio use or the sophisticated Violectric line for Hi-Fi enthusiasts, Pre-Gain is a cornerstone of our sound philosophy. This ensures that our amplifiers not only perform with technical precision but also reproduce sound exactly as intended: clear, noise-free, and perfectly balanced.
Conclusion: A Small Feature with a Big Impact
Pre-Gain may seem like a technical detail at first glance, but in practice, it’s a game-changer. It bridges the gap between different audio sources and headphones, eliminates common weaknesses like noise or uneven control, and delivers a listening experience that is both precise and enjoyable. Whether you’re a professional in the recording studio or simply want to enjoy your favorite music in the highest quality, a headphone amplifier with effective Pre-Gain adjustment brings you closer to your sound ideal. As Fried Reim and Lake People demonstrate, the key to audiophile perfection often lies in perfect volume control.

Doch was genau macht ein Kopfhörer-Verstärker?

Lake People, Violectric and Niimbus to be distributed by Audiowerk from January 2025
As of January 1, 2025, Audiowerk will take over the distribution of the Lake People, Violectric and Niimbus brands in Germany and Austria. cma audio, the parent company of Lake People, will be fully absorbed in its activities as a manufacturer under the new name Lake People audio and will leave the distribution business to the new partner from Hargesheim.
Lake People, Violectric and Niimbus distributed by Audiowerk
Lake People has long been a household name among audio connoisseurs. Famous above all for high-quality headphone amplifiers, but also converters, phono amplifiers, monitor controllers and mic preamps, the products from the German manufacturer have been delighting audio professionals and music lovers all over the world for almost 40 years. As of January 1, 2025, Audiowerk will take over the distribution of the three Lake People brands Lake People, Violectric and Niimbus for Germany and Austria.
Lake People audio focuses on production and development
The distribution cooperation with Audiowerk completes the strategic development that Lake People has been preparing for some time. Since the takeover of Lake People by cma audio GmbH, the latter had gradually withdrawn from the distribution business and focused on development and manufacturing in the pro audio segment. As of January 1, 2025, cma audio GmbH will now also be called Lake People audio and will place the distribution of its own brands Lake People, Violectric and Niimbus in the hands of Audiowerk.
In future, Lake People will focus entirely on the innovation and manufacture of first-class audio hardware, while Audiowerk will take over the entire distribution side.
Audiowerk: many years of experience with high-quality audio equipment
Lake People's trust in Audiowerk has grown over a long period of time - the companies have known each other for years and have worked together in the past, for example at trade fairs. The sales specialists from Hargesheim bring such diverse and renowned brands as Auratone, Black Lion Audio, PSI Audio and Tube-Tech to the German market. The sophisticated hardware solutions from Lake People fit perfectly into this portfolio and expand it in a meaningful way.
Lake People and Violectric in the Audiowerk distribution program
“We are very happy to have gained Audiowerk as a competent and passionate partner for the distribution of our products,” says Christof Mallmann , Managing Director of Lake People Audio, about the cooperation. “This gives us the opportunity to focus our energy even more on the development of outstanding audio electronics.”
Audiowerk is also delighted with the partnership. “I've been working in the pro audio industry for almost 40 years and Lake People products have been with me since my early years in this unique scene - for me, they are the epitome of an official headphone amplifier,” says Uwe Grundei , founder and Managing Director of Audiowerk. “And made in Germany to boot! All the more reason for me to look forward to the agreement with Christof Mallmann for the exclusive distribution of Lake People and the hi-fi brand Violectric for Germany and Austria. It is an honor and a privilege for us to integrate these valuable brands into our sales portfolio from January 2025 and to ensure strong awareness and presence of the products in the specialist trade with our entire team.”

Lake People G103-D-4 brings top-quality headphone amplification to Dante networks
The Lake People G103-D-4 offers top-notch Lake People headphone amplification for Dante networks. Via the standard RJ45 connector, the G103-D-4 can be seamlessly integrated into existing networks to receive two independent stereo signals. Both amplifiers power a ¼” jack output (6.3 mm) and a 3.5-mm jack output each, and both also boast Alps pots for level adjustments. The Pre-Gain feature allows for driving different headphone types perfectly while making full use of the pot’s travel. The device can be powered via USB-C, USB-B or PoE. All these features make the Lake People G103-D-4 the perfect, compact and flexible listening tool for demanding applications.
Headphone amplifier for Dante networks
The G103-D-4 is the first Lake People product with integrated Dante interface. Through an RJ45 connection, the Audinate Ultimo 4 chip provides four channels of digital audio that the G103-D-4 translates to the analogue domain via a high-quality D/A converter. The G103-D-4 is easy to hook up to a Dante network – one Ethernet cable is sufficient to have Lake People manufacture quality wherever it is required.
First-class amplification times two
Lake People is well-known around the world for exquisite tools in professional environments. In addition to its Dante interface, the G103-D-4 includes the outstanding amplifier circuitry from the G103 MKII – for years an indispensable part of many an audio engineer’s toolkit. The G103-D-4 even features two independent stereo headphone amplifiers that can be fed with individual stereo signals through the four Dante channels. After the D/A conversion, the signals are buffered and forwarded to the powerful amplifiers. The volume is controlled by Alps pots, guaranteeing optimal channel separation and balance.
Ideal for all headphones
One of the Lake People specials is the Pre-Gain circuit, allowing for completely different types of headphones to be comfortably driven by the same amp. The G103-D-4 can boost the signal level by 6 or 12 dB via internal jumpers, so even very demanding headphones are supplied with perfectly levelled audio. The Pre-Gain function keeps the volume in the most comfortable travel range of the pot, no matter if the headphones of choice are 16-ohm or 600-ohm models. As Pre-Gain can be adjusted for each of the two amplifiers of the G103-D-4 individually, it is also possible to tailor one amp for each of two favourite headphones to quickly switch between them. Every set of headphones is supplied with its perfect signal level, allowing it to perform its best. Both amplifiers each provide outputs as ¼” (6.3 mm) and 3.5-mm jacks.
Compact and reliable
The Lake People G103-D-4 becomes even more flexible by virtue of its very compact dimensions – it will find its place in pretty much any workspace. Where it can be powered in one of three ways: via USB-C, USB-B – or directly via the network through Power-over-Ethernet (PoE). Manufactured in Germany and made from high-quality components, the G103-D-4 is sure to do its job reliably for a long time.

Lake People G101 provides excellent headphone amplification in a compact format
Lake People introduces the new headphone amp HPA G101. The compact model enhances the product range with an entry-level device, upholding the typical Lake People qualities: the G101 offers neutral, low-noise amplification with outstanding voltage and power reserves to drive even the most demanding headphones easily. The famous Pre-Gain function allows for operating entirely different types of headphones and perfectly tailoring the amplifier to the headphones of choice. Input signals are fed into the G101 through RCA connectors, the outputs are realized as 6.3-mm and 3.5-mm jacks. The volume is controlled through a high-quality Alps pot.
G101: gateway to the world of Lake People
Lake People is famous for its excellent audio tools, especially headphone amplifiers. For many years, the G series has pleased the ears of both audio professionals and audiophiles. The G101 creates a new, even more attractive entry level to the Lake People product world. The compact amp contains the essence of high-quality headphone amplification “made in Germany”, underlining the particular strengths of Lake People: clever technology, outstanding sound, highest quality.
Reliable top-quality amplification
The Lake People HPA G101 is based on the G103, which itself can be traced all the way back to the G3 from 1994. The technology is accordingly well-developed: minimal noise, high power and voltage at the outputs, and great attenuation factor ensure impeccable sound. The robust amplifiers are practically indestructible and reliably play along in any professional environment, while the outstanding sound quality excites home audio enthusiasts. The solid aluminium housing protects the electronics from mechanical interference – making sure the Lake People G101 can do its job for a long time.
Intricate circuitry with Pre-Gain
One special feature of the Lake People headphone amplifiers is the Pre-Gain circuitry, which also enhances the versatility of the G101. Different headphone types have different requirements regarding the amplification and interact differently with the circuit. Through Pre-Gain, the G101 can be tailored perfectly to the connected headphones. The amplification is modified by -6 dB, 0 dB, +6 dB or +12 dB before the actual volume control, so circuitry and potentiometer can work optimally. This also results in an ideal travel of the volume pot independent of the headphone’s sensitivity. The Lake People G101 allows every set of headphones to perform at its best.
Compact and flawlessly manufactured
The Lake People G101 packs its qualities into a particularly compact format. The black anodized aluminium housing measures only 108 x 125 x 41 mm. On the front, the volume knob for the long-lasting Alps potentiometer is next to a 6.3-mm and a 3.5-mm jack output, the power switch and the activity LED. On the back, the G101 features the RCA inputs, the USB-C power input and the switches for Pre-Gain. Like all Lake People products, the G101 is built by hand in the company’s own workshop in Germany – which clearly shows in the manufacturing quality.
